Garage door rollers are small but critical components — they’re the wheels that run inside the vertical tracks and allow your door to open and close smoothly. When they wear out, you’ll hear it first. This guide explains when to replace them, which type to choose, and when to call a professional in Las Vegas.
Standard steel rollers last 5–7 years or about 10,000–15,000 cycles. Nylon rollers last 10–15 years (up to 100,000 cycles on premium models). In Las Vegas, the extreme heat accelerates wear — especially on plastic components — so expect to replace steel rollers every 4–5 years.
Steel rollers: Cheapest option ($3–$5 each), but loud and need regular lubrication. Not ideal for Las Vegas heat.
Nylon rollers: Quieter, last longer, and require minimal lubrication. Cost $7–$15 each. Best for most residential homes.
Nylon rollers with sealed bearings: Top-of-the-line. Cost $15–$25 each but will last 10+ years even in desert heat. We recommend these for Las Vegas homes.
The bottom two rollers (at the base of each track) can be replaced safely by a careful homeowner without releasing spring tension. The process:
Important: Never attempt to replace rollers on the top section of the door or near the torsion spring. The cables are under extreme tension and can cause serious injury.
Call Rainbow Garage Door Service if: the door is off track, a spring is broken, more than 2 rollers need replacement, or you notice the track is bent or misaligned. Full roller replacement (all 10–12 rollers on a standard door) costs $150–$250 for parts and labor and takes about an hour.
