Garage Door Sensor Problems: Complete Troubleshooting Guide

Garage door safety sensors are the small black boxes mounted near the floor on each side of your garage door opening. They create an invisible beam — if anything breaks that beam while the door is closing, the door automatically reverses. When sensors malfunction, your door may refuse to close, reverse immediately, or behave erratically. Here’s how to diagnose and fix sensor problems.

Understanding Your Safety Sensors

Sensors come in pairs: one sends an infrared beam (the sender, usually with a green/amber solid LED) and one receives it (the receiver, usually with a green LED when aligned). If the beam is broken or sensors are misaligned, the receiver’s LED will blink or go dark, and your opener will refuse to close the door.

Quick Diagnostic: Check LED Status

  • Both LEDs solid green: Sensors are aligned and working. Problem is elsewhere.
  • One LED blinking or dim: Sensors are misaligned or obstructed.
  • One LED completely off: That sensor has no power or is damaged.
  • Both LEDs off: Check the wiring from sensors to opener, or the opener itself.

Step 1: Remove Obstructions

Walk the path between the two sensors. Cobwebs, dirt, leaves, or any object in the beam’s path will trigger a false obstruction. Las Vegas dust can accumulate on sensor lenses — wipe them with a soft, dry cloth.

Step 2: Realign the Sensors

Sensors are mounted on brackets that can shift from vibration or accidental bumps. Loosen the wing nut holding each sensor, point them directly at each other until both LEDs are solid, then retighten. Even a few millimeters of misalignment can break the beam.

Step 3: Check the Wiring

Follow the sensor wires back to the opener motor head. Look for pinched, frayed, or disconnected wires. Sensor wires are low-voltage (white and white/black), so they can be spliced and repaired with wire connectors if damaged — just make sure the opener is unplugged first.

Step 4: Check for Sunlight Interference

Direct sunlight hitting a sensor lens can overwhelm the receiver — this is especially common in Las Vegas east-facing or west-facing garages in the morning and evening. Try shading the sensor or tilting it slightly downward. Some technicians use a short section of cardboard tube over the sensor as a sun visor.

When to Replace Sensors

If cleaning, realigning, and rewiring don’t resolve the issue, the sensor itself may be failed. Replacement sensors cost $20–$40 and take about 30 minutes to install. Make sure to match the sensor to your opener brand (LiftMaster sensors won’t work with Genie openers without an adapter).

Override Mode (Temporary Only)

You can hold the wall button continuously to override sensor protection and close the door. However, this should only be done as a temporary measure when you know the path is clear. Operating without working sensors is a safety violation and can void your opener’s warranty.
